Vampire Crawlers Combo Guide: How the Multiplier Works¶
Short answer
Play cards in strictly ascending mana cost (0 → 1 → 2). The multiplier starts at +100%. A card costing the same as the previous one breaks the chain. Wild cards slot in anywhere to bridge gaps. Chain Link (combo 12+) keeps combos across turns.
Combo is the engine at the heart of Vampire Crawlers. Master it and every other system (stats, gems, evolutions) multiplies on top of it. Skip understanding it and the game will feel arbitrarily hard. Here's every verified rule.
The basics¶
Play cards in strictly ascending mana cost, 0 → 1 → 2 → 3, and you build a combo. The multiplier starts at +100% and keeps scaling as the combo count grows. You can start a chain at any number; lower starts just leave more room to climb.
What the multiplier scales:
- Card effects: stat boosts (Duplicator's +1 Amount), draws (Attractorb), mana generation (Tomes)
- Crawler triggers: your characters' color-matched effects fire harder
What it does not scale:
- Gem effects: a Draw gem draws one card at combo 2 and combo 20 alike
- Wild cards: unless you run the Wild Buff arcana on a card with a yellow power number
Combo is one term in a larger sum, though. On the damage formula page, the combo term is added to the card's printed damage and its Amount bonus, then multiplied by Might and Area, so the same combo count produces very different numbers depending on the card underneath it.
The three rules that break combos¶
1. Same cost ends the chain. 0 → 1 → 2 → 2: the second 2-cost card gets no combo bonus and kills the chain. This is the single most common mistake in the game.
2. Gaps are dead ends. A hand of 0-1-2-4 costs can't climb past 2: you need a 3 or a Wild to bridge. When building your deck, check the curve, not just the cards.
3. Negative costs work. A card at −2 can start a chain that climbs −2 → −1 → 0 → 1. Don't sleep on cost-reduction effects (Christine's "next card −1", the Reduce Mana Cost gems).
Wild cards: the combo glue¶
Wild cards slot in anywhere without breaking the chain. 3 → Wild → 6 → Wild → 5 is fully legal: the wilds carry the combo across the gaps.
The fine print:
- True wild cards are destroyed when the play stack clears (Coin, Little Clover, Big Coin Bag...). Socket them with a Fireproof gem to make them permanent: you can slot it even after playing the card, before the Destroy phase.
- Friendship Amulet and Wings persist naturally: the two replayable wilds. Combo engines are built around them.
- The Wild gem turns any card into a wild; Combo Breaker lets anything combo into the socketed card; Reverse Combo (gem: Reverse, arcana-adjacent) lets the chain run up or down.
- The Return gem doesn't advance combo: the card goes back to your hand. Which means a Return-gemmed Attractorb can be played twice at the same step, or looped for value without touching the chain.
Card cracking and the Deaths¶
Drag a turn on too long, playing card after card without ending it, and your cards start to crack. Keep playing cracked cards and they shatter: permanently destroyed for the run, and every shattered card spawns a Trickster (Purple Death). He's weaker than Red Death, but fighting both at once is how runs die.
The counter-moves:
- End your turn before the cracks. Normally that resets your combo...
- ...unless you have Chain Link (arcana, unlocked by reaching combo count 12): your combo persists between turns. Play 0-1-2, end the turn, resume at 3. It's the single best arcana in the game for combo decks.
- Don't stall with empty passes either: Blue Death spawns if you pass too many turns without playing anything.
Building the engine¶
The pieces that keep a combo alive forever:
| Role | Cards | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Draw | Attractorb, Bracer | At high combo, one Attractorb draws your entire deck |
| Mana | Empty Tome → Light → Weighty → Ancient | Funds the climb; Empty Tome is a free 0-cost start |
| Hand size | Poppea, Pasqualina trigger | More cards per turn = more steps |
| Wilds | Friendship Amulet, Wings, Fireproof-gemmed coins | Bridge every gap |
| Wild generation | Celestial Dusting, Song of Mana | Make your own glue |
| Arcana | Chain Link (combo 12+), Mana Syphon (15 Mana in a turn) | Chain Link: cross turns. Mana Syphon: faster engine starts |
Krochi Freetto deserves a mention in any combo deck: his trigger builds Revival every time you play a Wild card: long combo turns are Wild-heavy by nature, so he self-charges.
