Vampire Crawlers Difficulty: The 10 Tiers and What Unlocks Them

Vampire Crawlers has no difficulty menu and no Hyper mode. Difficulty is a number printed on each named stage, running from 1 to 10, and you raise it by unlocking the next stage variant rather than by moving a slider. There are 18 stages spread across those 10 tiers and 9 dungeon families, and the hardest of them is Moongohigh at tier 10 with 7 floors.

A dungeon is not one place with three difficulty options: it is two or three separate stages that reuse the same art and enemy family, each with its own tier, floor count and unlock condition (the full stage list). "Raising the difficulty" means finishing the current stage so the next one appears on the World Map.

The 10 tiers, stage by stage

Every unlock condition below is the wording in the Town Hall Unlocks list, which is the game's own progression checklist (what the Town Hall does).

Tier Stage or stages Floors Unlock condition
1 Mad Forest 4 Unlocked with the World Map
2 Furious Forest; Inlaid Library 5; 5 Complete Mad Forest; reach level 10 in Mad Forest
3 Berserk Wood; Library West Wing; Teeny Bridge 5; 5; 1 Complete Furious Forest; complete Inlaid Library; reach level 15 in Inlaid Library
4 Library Sanctum; Dairy Plant 5; 5 Complete Library West Wing; complete Teeny Bridge
5 Milk Factory; Weeny Bridge 5; 1 Complete Dairy Plant; reach level 15 in Dairy Plant
6 Curd Refinery; Gallo Tower 5; 6 Complete Milk Factory; complete Weeny Bridge
7 Meany Bridge 1 Defeat the Giant Enemy Crab in Gallo Tower
8 Cappella Magna 5 Complete Meany Bridge
9 Cappella Ultima; Gallo Dungeons; Moongolow 5; 3; 5 Complete Cappella Magna; complete Cappella Ultima; complete ???
10 Moongohigh 7 Complete Moongolow

Two things fall out of that table. The tiers are not in release order: Teeny Bridge shipped at launch at tier 3, while Gallo Dungeons and Moongolow arrived in October 2026 at tier 9. And the tier number is not a clean measure of danger, because a 1-floor stage at tier 7 can end a run faster than a 5-floor stage at tier 6.

How the gates actually work

There are two kinds of unlock, and mixing them up is why players get stuck.

Level gates are checked inside a stage. Reaching level 10 in Mad Forest opens the Inlaid Library; reaching level 15 in the Inlaid Library opens Teeny Bridge; reaching level 15 in Dairy Plant opens Weeny Bridge. You do not have to finish the stage, and you do not have to win the boss fight: hit the level, leave, and the next stage is on the map.

Completion gates are checked on the boss. Furious Forest wants Mad Forest completed, Library West Wing wants Inlaid Library completed, and every tier from 4 upward is chained this way. The last three are worth spelling out because they are the ones people ask about:

  • Meany Bridge does not unlock by finishing Gallo Tower. It unlocks by defeating the Giant Enemy Crab inside Gallo Tower.
  • Cappella Magna unlocks by completing Meany Bridge, which is why the tier-7 bridge sits between two much longer dungeons.
  • Gallo Dungeons unlocks by completing Cappella Ultima, not by exploring the world map after the final boss.

That last point catches out players who read the Death Parade notes ("explore the world map after the final boss fight to find new dungeons") and go looking for Gallo Dungeons before finishing Cappella Ultima. The map reveals the area; the Town Hall condition still requires the clear.

Why there is no Hyper mode

Search "vampire crawlers hyper" and you will find Vampire Survivors results, because Hyper is a Vampire Survivors stage modifier. In Vampire Crawlers the wiki's dungeon page lists exactly two modes: Hurry Mode and Endless Mode. Neither of them is a difficulty setting in the Hyper sense.

Mode or lever What it changes How you get it
Hurry Mode Faster player and enemy actions; in-game timer counts double Sorceress' Tears relic, Gallo Tower
Endless Mode Floors continue past the last one, enemies scale up Seventh Trumpet relic, ??? (guide)
Curse Power Up Enemy strength +20% per rank, max +100%, more XP Completing Weeny Bridge, then 350 coins at the Shop
Stage tier The fixed 1 to 10 number of the stage you enter Unlock the next stage variant

If what you want is a harder run on purpose, Curse is the dial. It is a Power Up with five ranks, additive, +20% enemy strength per rank, capped at +100%, and it pays you back in experience. It is also a progression requirement: Lama Ladonna unlocks by completing a dungeon with 10% Curse or more, so at least one run has to carry some.

What actually changes when the number goes up

The published data does not include a global "tier 7 enemies have 2.5× health" table. What the wiki does publish is per-enemy health, and that shows two mechanisms.

The first is enemy variants. The Glowing Bat family ships in four numbered versions, and each version has a fixed health value wherever it appears:

Variant T1 T2 T3 T4
Glowing Bat 10 30 36 40
Glowing Bat Elite 100 500 1,000 1,500

Those four values are identical in Mad Forest, Inlaid Library, Dairy Plant, Gallo Tower and Cappella Magna. A T4 bat is a T4 bat whether you meet it at tier 1 or tier 8, so later stages are harder because they field higher-tier variants, not because the game multiplies a T1 bat on the way in.

The second is the "Below" set, the version of a Gallo Tower enemy that appears in Gallo Dungeons. Same monster, more health:

Enemy Gallo Tower Gallo Dungeons
Skullino 240 350
Skeleton2 330 600
Ghiavolo 440 1,200
ArchonSpada 1,300 2,400
Dragonshrimp 500 2,000
Leda (boss) — 225,000

Each enemy page also carries a Difficulty value of its own: Bat Elite is 1.5, Golem Elite is 0.7, Hag Elite is 2.6, Red Death is 0. What that number multiplies is not documented, and no source used here gives a formula for it. Treat the per-enemy health figures as the reliable data and skip any guide that claims a clean percentage per tier.

Which tier should you farm?

The honest answer is the highest tier you can clear without losing cards. Cracks and shatters are permanent for the run, so a stage that costs you two cards per floor is a worse farming spot than the tier below it, whatever the coin payout.

With that rule, three stages do most of the work:

  • Mad Forest (tier 1) for Skeletons and light sources. It is where the 444 Skeleton count for Mortaccio and the 20 light sources for the Fire Wand both happen, and the enemies die fast enough to keep a combo alive (gold farming route).
  • Berserk Wood (tier 3) once Mad Forest feels trivial. Same family, higher-tier variants, and the Coffin that unlocks Pugnala is in the forest line.
  • Dairy Plant (tier 4) for coins. It is the first stage where a full clear plus Overkill pays for a Power Up, and 5,000 lifetime coins is the Dommario unlock.

Teeny Bridge is the trap in that list. It is tier 3 and one floor, so it looks like a quick stop, but its published enemies include a 30,000 HP SwordFlint and a 20,000 HP SwordiLee (boss table). It is the steepest single-floor jump before Dairy Plant, and the reason "tier 3" cannot be read as "early".

Do higher tiers pay better?

Not in any way the published sources quantify. Coins come from light sources, chests and completing a dungeon, and gems come from level-ups and chests; no official table ties either to the stage tier (coin sources). The documented reward scaling is per enemy: a Bat gives 1 XP and a Bat Elite gives 30, and boss chests carry better pools than normal ones.

What higher tiers do give you is access: the relics and Crawlers that sit behind them. The Lapidary Loupe is in Gallo Tower, Ovenkilt is in Cappella Ultima, and the Seventh Trumpet is behind the ??? area that only opens after the game is finished. That is the real payout for climbing, not a bigger coin multiplier.

Q: What is the hardest difficulty in Vampire Crawlers?

Tier 10, and it is a single stage: Moongohigh, 7 floors, unlocked by completing Moongolow. It is also the only stage at that tier. The hardest fight is not on the tier ladder at all: Red Death has 1,000,000 HP and waits on the optional floor below a dungeon's final boss.

Q: How do I unlock Hyper?

You cannot, because Hyper does not exist in this game. Hyper is a Vampire Survivors modifier, and the Crawlers dungeon page lists only Hurry and Endless as modes. The nearest equivalents are the Curse Power Up (+20% enemy strength per rank, up to +100%) and the next stage variant.

Q: Is there a difficulty setting I missed?

No. There is no options-menu difficulty and no New Game Plus toggle in any patch note or wiki page used here. What looks like a difficulty setting is the stage you pick on the World Map, plus the Hurry and Endless switches once you own their relics.

Q: Do enemies get more health at higher tiers?

Per enemy, yes, but not through a published global multiplier. The wiki ships higher-tier enemy variants (Glowing Bat T1 at 10 HP up to T4 at 40) and the Gallo Dungeons "Below" set (ArchonSpada 1,300 up to 2,400), and it publishes no formula that converts a tier number into a health percentage.

Q: Can I lower the difficulty?

Only by choosing an easier stage. There is no assist mode, and the two toggles you can flip (Hurry and Endless) both make the game harder or longer rather than easier. The one lever that helps is progression: Power Ups and gem slots carry into every run, so a tier you failed early gets easier without the tier changing.
