Vampire Crawlers Review: Is It Worth $9.99?¶
Short answer: the numbers say yes, with one asterisk. Here's every verified data point on how this game actually landed.
The scores, verified¶
| Source | Verdict | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Very Positive | 98% of 4,600+ reviews in the first two days; 94% of 8,639 English reviews as of 3 November 2026 |
| Game Informer | 8/10: "Dazzling Dungeons" | "Vampire Crawlers elevates an otherwise simple but highly entertaining card game..." |
| Players | 1,000,000+ in the first weeks | For a $9.99 deckbuilder spin-off, that's a hit by any measure |
Metacritic aggregates the critic reviews at 82 from 28 outlets (26 on the PC tab). The parent game, Vampire Survivors, sits at a 7.4 user score there, so don't let search results confuse the two.
Why it works¶
The design philosophy is stated plainly by poncle's chief strategy officer Matteo Sapio:
"We love card games, but we are not very good at card games. They're complicated. So, we made the game that we wanted to play."
That's the whole game in one quote. Vampire Crawlers takes the Vampire Survivors universe and bolts it onto a combo-driven deckbuilder: ascending mana costs build multipliers, Wild cards keep chains alive, and the whole thing runs inside first-person dungeon crawls. It's a card game that doesn't punish you for being bad at card games, which is exactly the market gap poncle aimed at.
What the reviews consistently praise:
- The combo feel: playing your whole deck in one escalating turn is the dopamine loop, and it's tuned generously (combo starts at +100%).
- Run length: snappy dungeon runs, not 90-minute Slay the Spire marathons.
- Price-to-content: $9.99 for 161 achievements' worth of unlocks, 25 characters, 18 evolutions and a secret boss most players never even find.
The asterisk¶
It's a spin-off, not a sequel. If you come in wanting more bullet-heaven action, the turn-based card loop will feel slow for the first hour. The game also leans on you understanding its combo rules, same-cost cards break your chain, cracked cards shatter, without a great tutorial for any of it. (That's literally why this site exists; see Card Mechanics.)
Verdict by player type¶
- Vampire Survivors fans wanting a strategy layer: buy it, day one, full price.
- Deckbuilder fans: buy it; it's one of the most approachable entries in the genre.
- Pure action fans: try the demo content first (several characters and cards are demo-accessible) or Game Pass it.
- Completionists: the Red Death secret boss and MissingN0 are a genuinely hard endgame; see Secrets.
